How to Use Claude AI: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

What is Claude AI?

Claude is an AI chat assistant made by Anthropic. You can ask it questions, have it draft or edit writing, explain code, analyze a document you upload, or just think through a problem out loud with it. It runs in a browser at claude.ai, with mobile and desktop apps available too — no installation required to get started.

Create your free account

• Go to claude.ai in your browser.
• Click "Sign up" and continue with an email address or a Google account.
• If you sign up with email, you'll get a one-time code to verify — enter it and you're in.
• No credit card is needed for the free plan.

Start your first conversation

• Once logged in, you'll see a message box in the middle of the screen.
• Type anything — a question, a task, or something you want explained — and press Enter.
• Claude replies in the same window, and you can keep replying to go back and forth, the same way you'd text someone.
• Each new topic is best started as a fresh conversation, using the "New chat" button, so old context doesn't confuse the answer.

Upload a document or image

• Click the paperclip / attachment icon next to the message box.
• Choose a PDF, Word document, image, or spreadsheet from your device.
• Ask a question about it directly — e.g. "Summarize this" or "What's the main argument on page 3?"
• This is useful for long reports, contracts, lecture notes, or screenshots you want explained.

Write a prompt that gets a good answer

The quality of the answer usually comes down to how the question is asked. A few habits that consistently help:

• Say what you want, specifically. "Write a 200-word product description for a leather backpack, casual tone" beats "write something about my backpack."
• Give context. Who it's for, what it's used for, and any constraints (length, tone, audience) all shape the answer.
• Ask for a format. "As a bulleted list", "in a table", or "as three short paragraphs" all change how the answer comes back.
• Iterate. If the first answer isn't quite right, say what to change rather than starting over — Claude keeps the conversation's context.

Use Projects for ongoing work

• If you're working on something over several days (a research paper, a business plan, a coding project), create a Project from the sidebar.
• Add relevant files and notes to the Project once — every chat inside it can then reference that material automatically.
• This saves you from re-uploading or re-explaining the same background every time you open a new chat.

Choose free or paid

• The free plan gives a set number of messages every few hours — enough for casual, everyday use.
• Paid plans raise those limits and unlock more capable models for heavier or more frequent use.
• A sensible approach: start free, and only upgrade once you're actually hitting the usage limit regularly.
